Serving as the now largest skatestopper of all time, 20th Century Fox has engaged Skatebook in a legal dispute regarding the “improper” use of the skateboarding Simpson’s trouble-maker Bart Simpson in an issue produced back in 2008. While Fox may be under the wrong impression in thinking that Skatebook is a wealthy publication with neverending pockets of gold deblumes, they’re horrible mistaken and as the result of the suit Skatebook will more than likely be closing their hardback covers for good. It is expected that in the future the price of this issue will go up significantly in cost and as the result I purchased two copies…one for browsing and one for future selling…a nest egg if you will to ensure that my future children will go unburdened by college debt.

I understand that as a business you’re entitled to protect your assets at all costs but it comes to a point where you’re being so inhumane that you’re destroying another man’s livelihood solely based upon your greed. Yes, I do understand that Skatebook had illegally used the Simpson’s icon to appeal to a larger scale audience in hopes of having them purchase their product…that is wrong. However, why is it so harmful to Fox as this is certainly not a market which they have capitalized upon since their creation in 1935…I haven’t seen them produce any top selling “skatebooks” since that time. Couldn’t have a cease and desist been issued requiring all known issues to be tracked down and pulled from the shelves? I think there are countless other solutions that could’ve been implemented but Fox decided to go right for the throat…well played.

The NY-based lounge, D’espresso, used a decorative book-print tile sold by Imagine Tile to decorate their Soho location. A bit more about the custom tile creation process can be found over at the Imagine Tile site where D’espresso is currently listed as a featured client. While the seating is rather limited, I wouldn’t mind standing around browsing through the collection of titles making mental notes of selections to pick up in the tangible form.

Side Note: While rather simplistic, their site is also quite entertaining and well designed.

Founded in 2003 and housed in a 1929 Nabisco box printing facility, Dia:Beacon is a 300,000 square foot gallery that houses an impressive collection of works gathered since the 1960’s. Designed by Nabisco’s staff architect Louis N. Wirshing Jr., the building was exchanged through a collection of owners until reaching International Paper who then donated the grounds to Dia in 1999. Upon beginning their renovations, Dia enlisted Robert Irwin to draft up a layout that would allow the space to be utilized in a traditional fashion; the end result is one that is allows each piece to be viewed with sufficient space…enough to appreciate it from each and every angle.

Dia has featured the works of Bernd and Hilla Becher, Louise Bourgeois, Michael Heizer, Robert Irwin, On Kawara, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Bruce Nauman, Robert Ryman, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, and Lawrence Weiner to name a few. While the art was breathtaking, I have to say that personally I was more overjoyed by being in the presence of quality architecture…I was even chastised several times for photographing the infinitely repeating triangular-vaulted ceilings, the high pillars that divided the light allowing it to spill across the cold cement floors, and the varying patterns of the window panes.

I love <s>stealing</s> borrowing content from Dwell. I feel as a subscriber I’m entitled to be able to utilize their content. While I’m sure that clause isn’t in the subscription contract, I’m sticking to it until I hear from a lawyer.

While it is every surfers dream to have a shack on the beach enabling early morning sessions without the fear of gridlocked traffic keeping you from the first breaks, Eric Grunbaum took it to the next with his home in Venice Beach, California. As the creative director for an advertising agency, Grunbaum obviously has style and it shown through in his 3 bedroom beach-bungalow designed by architect Barbara Bestor. I have to say that by far, this is one of my favorite exteriors to date. The inside, however, could do with a few minor alterations but I’m sure that I’d find a way to make it work.

The past few days have been some of the absolute roughest that I’ve ever endured. I was tried in a multitude of ways and my will to push through was stretched further than any asian gymnast in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. In the end I am still here but I must say that it was one hell of a ride and without the support of my true friends…I don’t know if I would’ve made it. Last January I left my job voluntarily but just recently I lost my job forcefully. The feeling and emotions that I had were so abnormal to me but in the end I am glad that I can feel them instead of just being cut off. Afterward, I was able to take a step back from the situation and assess what it all really meant and in the end I’ve taken away from it invaluable lessons that will forever change my demeanor and cadence during future endeavors. To all who have stood by me and cheered me on during this time, or any time, thanks…I’m going to make you all and, most importantly, myself very proud.

While generally not a fan of visiting doctor’s offices, occasionally I find a bit of enjoyment in it due to the decor choices. I think I am more or less intrigued by the implementation of psychology during the planning and developmental stages of erecting a practice. For example, the location of my most recent visit was predominantly draped in greens and tans. Green is a soothing color that promotes peace and serenity. Additionally so, it also represents health which would make sense as far as it’s inclusion in the medical field. Tan, a member of the Brown family, is used to emit warmth and bring about feelings of comfort and security.

Color Psychology is even more interesting for me now going back and looking through my photographs and concluding more of my feelings and overall moods based on what I had gravitated to at the particular moment of the actuation.

I was talking to a friend earlier in regards to my cameras and how they seem to function according to my mood. If things are stressful for me, then somehow the camera will manage to yield a light leak on the film or it’ll overlap frames. On the other hand, if I’m in a positive or optimistic mood, it seems to be tack sharp and perfectly exposed even with me simply guessing instead of carefully metering. It’s an interesting concept and now with my newly acquired freedom, I plan on testing the hypothesis more intensively. The featured room, is where most of my experiments will be conducted. I am sure that you’re foaming at the mouth with jealousy…

I got this tattoo a few months ago with my great friend Vanessa. At the time, I was going through a rough patch in life and needed a daily reminder to myself that things will be okay…it’s often the last thing I see at night and the first thing I see peeking out of the covers in the morning. I knew that it always meant something to me…skateboarding and life references both applied to this one…but now more than ever I really feel that I’m capable of pushing through…regardless of what hurdle is tossed in my way. It’s an interesting moment of self-realization that I’ve faced with but I wouldn’t change it for the world and eagerly anticipate the next venture.

While his work has been just about everywhere as of late, I’m posting it here too…because whoever has missed it thus far deserves an opportunity to fall equally in love with the work of Canadian born and bred Todd McLellan. Allowing himself to slowly dismantle and intricately arrange pieces of various common goods, McLellan creates a singular planed-image that has a unique presentation that proves to be very visually stimulating while incredibly subtle. Although all images share a similar resemblance, they all have their own individual identity due to the careful selection of subject matter; McLellan focuses on goods that have lived life and show actual wear opposed to those polished and directly from the factory assembly line. On his personal site, you’re able to see a sped-up version of his creation process…

Ever since I’ve seen a few of my friends in their Barbour Jackets I knew that I would not rest until I owned one for myself. After perusing through their new line in the store recently I have decided upon the Dickens jacket…it will prove a worthy addition to my closet full of awesomeness. Now…who to rob in order to acquire the necessary funds…hmmm….

Discovered thanks to Elephant(see post below), I’ve fallen in love with a great deal of work that I’d otherwise overlook. The accompanying text to his interview in Issue #5 made Fons Schiedon out to be not only the type of artist I admire and would love to collect a piece or two from, but rather as an individual I’d love to be friends with. It also makes Berlin appear to be a possible destination for future conquests after I establish dominance over the five boroughs. I certainly would not mind sweating through a shirt or two enjoying some crackers and water in Volkspark Fredrichshain Park. Who knows though…but his work sure is swell.

In preparation for today’s waiting room excursion, I headed to Barnes and Noble in search of some quality literature to putz around with. While making my way to the cashier, my attention was grasped by a magazine with the word “Elephant” written on it with large black and pink letters(truthfully, who isn’t a sucker for big pink letters…I mean it gets your attention right?). At a first glance, I had absolutely no idea what the publication was about but to be honest, I didn’t really care as it is a wonderfully made book…something that truly stood out amongst the generically design dribble that I’ve been seeing variations of for the past decade. From the binding, to the texture of the cover, to the actual scent of the ink on paper…I knew that I’d love this book. The UK based publication is an infant that focuses on Arts & Visuals…no artistic medium is discriminated here. Within the 200+ pages you can find anything from collage to sculpture or typography to paper mache figurines. While the price point of $19.99 is a bit steep for your general publication, after viewing all that it has to offer Elephant is certainly well worth the extra coin. Unlike other magazines in it’s genre, Elephant is more comparable to a coffee table book that will remain a major contender on your bookshelf for years to come as opposed to being tossed under your bed in a rubber-maid storage bin that only sees the light of day when you’re digging for your other Puma sneaker.

About a year or so ago I made a pact with myself that I’d attend at least one gallery/museum per month…the end result…about a year of not going to any shows. Today, amidst the insanity that is my daily life, I managed to stop into The Whitney at an opportune time; due to the proximity to closing time I was granted admission to the museum for free. I managed to view nearly every piece in the museum in under 30 minutes and have to say that there were certainly a few standouts for me. As of late I’ve noticed that my overall creative outlook is greatly enhanced by viewing work of varied mediums…not necessarily just those I directly practice in. For those of you look to score an equally sweet deal on the entrance fee…just go at roughly 5:25 and tell them Keith sent you…it’s a guarantee win.

I am currently scanning my my newest roll of medium format film; the last roll I had picked up was some 4 months ago…maybe more. I haven’t been happy with much of what I’ve shot but I’ve beginning to care less and less. I remember when photography was a competition to me…I was the young guy working in a pool of seasoned veterans…they had nothing to prove and seemingly, I had to prove everything. I used to shoot and shoot and shoot away…blasting countless actuations in hopes of acquiring the next photo that would gain me a bit of recognition amongst my peers…allowing me to make the next step…to get the better assignment. After a while it lost its luster…what you may ask? Photography. I lost my drive to create…not because I didn’t love it but because I had spent so much time modeling my creative mind after what I thought others would like…not what I liked…and when I stopped to think about what it was that I liked, I had no idea.

Photography was created to establish lasting memories not to create another competitive outlet for those who weren’t a fan of organized sports anymore. I saw myself fall into the habit of composing my shots identically to that of the artist whose latest book I just read…Renaldi, Soth, Hido, Abel…all of them. I lost MY own train of thought…I lost my identity…my photographic life. Since I’ve worked in the field of photography here in New York, it’s been quite a love hate relationship…working in the news industry has shown me that the best photograph doesn’t always see the light of day but rather the image that best accompanies the text. As a photographer your goal is to have the image do the talking…a photo is worth a thousand words but a great photo is worth an million words. What am I getting at? To be honest…I don’t really know but this is how my head works so I’m writing it down. I sometimes wish that I was a photographer…that I never gave up the dream that I started back with so long ago between the crowds and the barricades of my favorite bands when I was just a teen…when I used to carry around my N65 proudly and drop my film off weekly at the Neshaminy mall…back then things were easy and autofocus was just fine because the pictures came out in the end…but I guess this is growing up.

I remember picking up my first board in the mid 90’s when companies like Birdhouse and Maple dominated the industry…I wanted the same Menace hoodie for 3 Christmas’ in a row(never got it though) and my first board was a Birdhouse Willy Santos Frogs deck(signed by the birdman himself and is still sitting pretty in my closet back home). The pros of that era, aside from a very select few, lived in run down skatehouses with whatever other pros rode for the same companies…the salaries were far from six figures and being sponsored meant they got the product they needed…not an absurd surplus that needed to be stored in the garage. Skateboarding was real…it was grimey…it was gritty…and it wasn’t the cool thing to do…we did it because we loved it and didn’t give a shit what anyone had to say about it. Today, things are extremely different. Pros take part in contests with million dollar payouts, have their faces plastered all over products by Pepsi and Gatorade, are flown around the world in private jets, and go to parties where they rub elbows with the worlds top celebrities. Children from the projects, an area that generally revolves around basketball and other common sports, are now picking up skateboards because of major influences such as Stevie Williams and Terry Kennedy who glamorize the thug life in their professional careers. I am happy that the sport has been pushed to a demographic that would otherwise be glazed over, but I am not exactly enthralled by the implementation of the competitive nature that the sport note bares.

Was an interesting…from a rapping blues experience to a drunk woman who looked as though she was vomiting in her boyfriend’s blazer pocket it was surely a night to remember (sidenote: I really really really dislike the whole Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day festivities and need to avoid them at all costs going forward). But I must say, the highlight of my fantastic voyage was sitting down next to a man with a Cinelli Mash frame, freshly paint, hung on the back of his Chrome Ivan Rolltop Pack. I’ve always been into the look of Cinelli’s in magazines and online but there is just something about seeing them in person that makes them appear as though it’s a total necessity…not a want but rather a must have. While I love my Mercier Kilo TT and wouldn’t trade it for the world…I probably would trade it for a Cinelli but I’m sure I’d also have to throw in an extra $1000.

I’ve always been interested in the Mamiya Press but never really took the time to utilize one…just saw a few photos here and there. Due to the fact that I actually like photography, by default I appreciate it’s roots and as the result have an undying love/devotion to Polaroid. After spending a few minutes talking to one of our staff photographers who has been the proud owner for some years, I’ve grown a bit more intrigued. If I can find a good deal I wouldn’t mind picking one up…in Black of course because Silver is for posers.

I never realized how much work that I actually owned until just now sitting in bed and looking around my room(and knowing how much I have sprawled out across the table in the living room). While I’ve always been a fan, it’s not until recently that I’ve found myself actually appreciating the work especially those from different mediums. I am extremely fortunate to have been in the presence of so many talented individuals who have provided me with their pieces at an incredibly affordable price. Going forward, I hope to amass an even larger collection…perhaps on so large that I’ll need to build an addition just to house all that I decide to not hang up.

I sit and wonder what it’d be like to come home and relax in this fine piece of furniture…sure it costs about 1/10th of my college tuition but it could last a lifetime and college, for me, was only 4 years…so it’s not that bad right? Whether or not I will actually acquire one of these is besides the point as Herman Miller has served as an inspiration to a countless mass of designers across various platforms: his aesthetic and style is so unique to the point that others have made their livings off of emulating his work attempting to make carbon copies. Regardless of how hard they try they’ll never succeed in creating such a legacy as Miller has done for himself…with that being said…one day you’ll be mine.

While I haven’t had the ability and/or drive to shoot lately I’ve managed to pull out the T2 from my Ossington Sack every few walks and managed to click off a few frames. While I’m not entirely happy with the photos, I am glad to see that I still have the same excitement waiting for my film to come back from the lab. On the sad side of things, I am in search of a new lab in the Manhattan/Brooklyn areas. I have been dedicated to the fellows of Manhattan Color labs but as of late I’ve noticed a significant amount of neglect with my last few rolls. I understand that I am not single-handedly supporting their business with my 10 rolls a month but regardless, each roll should be treated with the same amount of respect and care…regardless of whether the roll belongs to Renaldi or myself. The last draw for me was having several hairs inside of the plastic sleeves. Suggestions are welcome.

I’ve noticed more and more that when I’m in a good mood I’m more prone to stumble upon things that I love and want to own…I guess financial stability and happiness never really do go hand in hand. It’s a scientifically proven fact I tell you that was affirmed once again today in my random discovery of Bristol, England based illustrator Adam Hancher through my haphazard browsing of several interlinked sites. I am generally not a huge fan of illustration work for no reason in particular but there is something about his work that is so animated and fun that makes me want to break out a sketch book and attempt to muster together something better than your average 3rd grade art student. While I have always been fond of a generally warm, natural color palette I even enjoy samplings of his more vibrant work. Go Adam Go!

In an era where graphics were essentially responsible for moving your product, Alien Workshop had enlisted on of the greats-to-be Don Pendleton to define their visual identity. Over the course of his 7 years of involvement, Pendleton would help sculpt the team into one of the biggest legacies of all times.

Check out Don’s site for an incredible retrospective documenting everything that he’s done…it truly is amazing.

A big congratulations goes out to hometown homie Tom Asta. In a recent tweet(I can’t believe it was released on twitter), Jamie Thomas announced Tom Asta as the newest pro to join the ranks of the Black Box family. With boards shipping in just a few weeks and a pro model shoe from Fallen hitting the shelves already, Tom has proven to a lot of people with dedication and an undying love, all things are possible. Wishing you nothing but the best in the future Tom…although I must admit I liked you more when you were shorter than me and couldn’t grow a mustache.

My Mamiya 7ii…one day soon we will meet again. I remember when a friend of mine, Billy Jones, said that he had a large collection of cameras and of that the only one he regretted parting ways with was his 7ii. When I had told him that I was listing mine he urged me not to and my response was “who cares…it’s just a camera. If I miss it that badly I can buy another one.” Part of that, saying that I could buy another one, was true. However, saying that it was just a camera was one of the biggest lies I’ve ever said. Over the course of my time with the Mamiya, I managed to capture some of the most beautiful and perfectly composed images of my time as a photographer. The sheer ease and simplicity of the camera interface enabled it to become more of an extension of my sight as opposed to be an external tool. I cannot wait until this one is back in my grips. Maybe next time I’ll even get it in chrome…YEAH RIGHT.

I’ve been wanting to invest in a green thumb as of late; I’ve noticed that it’s always an absolute essential in the lives of those immersed in design. Whether it be a tiny cacti on their desk hiding almost invisibly behind the stack of Elle Decors and Dwells or an appropriately placed terrarium it seems to be a must-have. So today after running around the city on an endless doctor hunt (mom, I’m fine don’t worry), I made my way over to Sprout Brooklyn. I was greeted with a chipper associate who was a complete doppelganger for Home Improvement’s Al. After spending a good 20 minutes looking around the store pretending as though I was familiar with all of the gardening mumbo-jumbo I made my way to the register and walked out with a bag of 4 plants and pots all under $50. Unlike most(I speak to the few that I’ve really been in) plant stores, Sprout understands that their customers are not only interested in gardening and as the result offer them a variety of other accessories to make their experience a bit more pleasurable. The overall ambiance in the store is very tranquil and soothing…I can only imagine how wonderful it’d be in the summer. Perhaps my favorite part of the visit was the vast amount of information that their staff bares and the manner in which they deliver it to a newbie such as myself; at no point in our talk did I feel belittled by my lack of expertise. I plan on earning a few gardening merit badges in the coming months and using Sprout as my coach along the way…I’m sure I’ll need a few pep talks.

Taking a similar approach to Jen Bekman’s 20×200, Mammoth Collection is an online marketplace for artists. The work, released in limited edition quantities, is both affordable and quality offering patrons the ability to decorate their otherwise baring and drab walls with a bit of life. While they operate on a slightly smaller scale than 20×200, a vast assortment of work is still available with a noticeable focus on both photography and drawing. I look forward to the company’s expansion in the future. Check them out.

Am I a fan of the area? No. Am I a fan of the house? Hell yes! Completed in 2004 as the first home in the controversial neighborhood, Houses at Sagaponac is minimalistic in its approach allowing the fine details of the facade to do the talking. I recall reading an excerpt from Apartment Therapy’s Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan in which he said that, “a liveable room is composed of 80% neutral tones with a strategic placement of 20% vibrant colors.” Judging by the small selection of images within the gallery, the house designed by architect Nilay Oza does just that and as the result leaves me oogling all over my desk. There is just something about recessed ceiling to floor windows covering an entire wall that I adore…perhaps it lies in the fact that for many of my years as an apartment renter the majority of my windows have directly faced a brick wall some 5 feet away.

As I’ve began to collect, or aspired to collect, more art work I have been searching for a storage solution. Being that I live in apartment currently with two other individuals space isn’t exactly something that we have in surplus and cramming prints into decrepit paper boxes under my bed will no longer suffice. So what did I do? Apparently, go online and search for the most expensive item I could find. The Professors Flat File by Poul Kjaerholm is a Danish piece created in the 60’s and is composed of pine and steel. While I haven’t bought this, yet, don’t be surprised if one day you(whoever you are…no seriously who are you?) show up to my future abode and are greeted by this lovely piece in the doorway. Seriously…it might happen.

When browsing through the Redux Collections making image selections for an upcoming story, I stumbled onto the work of Morgan Ashcom. As you all should know by now, I am a skateboard enthusiast moreso than most and as the result have been following the culture of Skatopia for years. For those of you that are malinformed on the topic, Skatopia is a skateboarding commune based in the Rutland, Ohio area that hosts a variety of youth that are otherwise deemed as degenerates by current societal standards; many have left their unstable homes in search of a more liberated lifestyle governed by their passion and dedication to the way of life. Operated by Bernice Martin and the CIA(not THAT CIA), Skatopia is the home to true roots of the sport which can be seen in their on site Museum. Numerous documentaries and projects have been done on the location but I must say that the work of Morgan Ashcom is now above my favorites…so much so that I’ve already reached out to buy a print. I highly recommend you do the same.

As a recent subscriber to Dwell, I’ve found it absolutely necessary to hop onto their site for their more interactive content. Above all, my favorite is certainly their house tours…not necessarily the one’s located in similar areas to my own but rather those in place completely opposite (I’m sure that we share some commonalities…perhaps we both enjoy a good subway churro on the way into the office at 8AM…who knows). As Dwell notes in one of their more recent posts, architects Cecilia and Yoel have made the best of an “affected” region and transformed their ground level domicile into nothing short of a work of art. My favorite aspects are certainly the original trim that remained in tact and the front door. Never did I imagine I’d say that I loved a door but hey…I do.

Read Dwell online for more glorious home tours.

Most of the people in my life, I’ve met through skateboarding in some way, shape, or form. As the result it amazes me to think that not long ago anyone who partook in the sport was viewed as a societal reject incapable of succeeding at life and now the vast majority of these “misfits” are among the most talented individuals I know. Nick Van Woert is a prime example of this theory. I met Nick about 6 months back while skateboarding at a local park. Quiet and modest…it came as a shock to me that Nick was such a obscurely creative individual. After having spent some more time around him and hearing the stories others had to share about him, I began to realize the true meaning of art. We create not for financial gain or for public approval but rather for the love of it…for the ability to be sporadic and to not adhere to any sense of rhyme or reason… to do without having to think “why”. With that being said it makes sense that many individuals who are creative on the board find a means to continue that same artistry off the board.

If you’re in the New York area on February 26th and happen to be searching for something to do, try to stumble over to the Yvon Lambert gallery at around 6PM for Nick’s opening of Breaking and Entering…I assure you won’t regret it.

You even have the option to follow users who have continually posted items that make you e-swoon and navigate to links where you can purchase said items directly if your bank account grants you permission.

One of my newest finds is this space efficient Black & White digital clock by Kibardindesign. While my taste isn’t exactly contemporary enough to mesh with this one, I am still a fan of its sleek and simplistic look.

Move over Chris Angel there’s some competition in town coming in the form of architecture wonderboy Alex Haw of the Atmos Studio. His latest series of designs sprinkles a voluptuous series of curves into homes through a detailed process that leaves the viewer feeling as though they’ve entered into a fun house of flawlessly executed design. His rather risky implementation of the technique into two London residences has proven to be most droolworthy.

Or perhaps I’ll blame it on my newfound love/obsession/adoration of interior design and my never-ending lust for quality artwork but I finally buckled down and purchased an Evan Hecox piece. For some time now he has been one of the artists that I’ve admired…from his early graphics on the Chocolate decks I’ve been a fan and it’s continued well into my adult life. Will his talent ever fade? Nope probably not…and now with the recent acquisition of his piece entitled Ghost of Winter Berlin neither will my love for his work. Thank you for contributing all that you have to a sport that I enjoy so much. I’ll cherish it for an eternity and then some.

I must start off by admitting that I’m not a huge foodie. While I love eating, I’ve been known to frequent the same places and the same meals time and time again…perhaps it’s because I don’t like to think or perhaps it’s because I’m afraid of exploring on my own but due to the Hallmark holiday of Valentine’s day and the iron will of a Jewish girlfriend, I was forced out of my comfort zone and into the ever-expanding reach of NYmag restaurants. With reservation availability at a low and wallet inflated due to a recently received paycheck I decided to splurge and venture into the world of fine dining. After roughly two hours of vehemently searching through the listings I decided upon Park Avenue Winter; a midtown east eatery with seasonal based scenery. We were greeted by a rather chipper staff which is somewhat uncommon for one who works in the tourist district of Times Square. With a waitstaff whose vocabulary included “It’s my pleasure” and “you’re quite welcome sir” it was an absolute delight. A never-ending plate of lettuce or two and a chicken + salmon later we headed home arm in arm. Can’t say that it was anything short of perfection.

I’d certainly pick up a Pennsylvania map aside from the fact that it, for some god forsaken reason, is attached to New Jersey. President James Buchanan is surely rolling in his grave on this one (P.s. I truly love New Jersey).

The project, updated weekly, allows a personally selected artist to illustrate his/her home state via it’s known(or maybe not so known) motto. The finished body of work will be on sale at some point or another so start pinching your pennies and sifting through your couch cushions…hell sift through your friends cushions too while you’re at it.

should play like a film in your imagination gripping you until the last page and leaving you lusting for more even moreso than your best lover. That is exactly what both books by Colum McCann have done for me. Having just finished This Side of Brightness, a fictional piece documenting the lineage of an African-American sandhog working in the depths of the original New York rail tunnels, I’ve found myself searching for an eraser to change my favorite author response on the questionnaire of life. In just under 300 pages McCann encourages us to time travel through the lives of a handful of animated characters; he allows us to see their peaks and valleys, their rise and their fall, and perhaps most importantly their resurrection. The level of compassion that McCann shows with his words evokes a level of sympathy from the reader allowing them to be consumed by the underlying theme of rebirth…in life we all have struggles and some bear a cross that is harder to carry but if you take the time to see how simple it all can be you just may smile and enjoy what life has to offer whether you’re in the belly of the river or touching the clouds high up on the catwalk.

that it’d be a fun project to start redoing my room since I became gainfully employed once again. Now, about 3 months into the position I’ve seemingly amassed myself an infinite laundry list of items to buy. Perhaps it’s due to the inspiration of Dwell, The Brick House, Apartment Therapy, or the countless other sites I’ve spent time idling on. While I may never complete the list prior to my signing into the retirement home, I must say that I am quite pleased with my evolution from a post-collegiate mix-and-match oriented individual into a mini-diy, design-centric, ocd-infused adult…just 12 weeks ago my bed+box spring combo lay draped under a painters tarp in the center of my starkly white room almost unbearable to be in due to dreadful amount of boring that it exuded. Prior to leaving for work this morning I spent a good 15 minutes just admiring the change.

I never thought that I’d see the day when I would hold up paint samples to my dresser to assure that nothing will clash, but I guess that with a quarter life crisis comes a variety of unexpected tendencies. One day, perhaps, I will have a nice camera again to share with the world the splendor that is my luxurious room full of ocean-scented linens still crisp from barely being used and perfectly aligned artwork amassed from a collection of friends across the states.

In the process, feel free to share any and all favorites. Cheers!

Over the past few months we’ve spent a lot of time creating a product that very few people have had the opportunity to view and now it’s live. Newscorp’s own, The Daily, is officially available to the public as of February 2nd at noon. While the newspaper industry has been suffering for years, it is Murdoch’s hope that the ipad based publication will reinvent the way we interact with the news. Do I believe that it will work? Well…would I still be here if I didn’t?

- Bed Frame

- Dresser

- End Table

- Desk Lamp

- Shelves

- Rug

- Desk

- Desk Chair

- Floor Lamp

- Art & Crafty Frames

- Terrarium Plants

Looks like I just about need a new life…crap. Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting my progress in finding pieces that I like/can afford and will let you know of my thrifting attempts/failures and my exploration into the ever-so-fun DIY life. With the infinite reach of the web, I’ll be sure to muster up something half-decent or at least I’ll photoshop it to appear to be.

To complete the task at hand I’m picking up:

- Various primers

- Power Sander

- Power Drill

oh yeah…Happy New Years.

While I don’t really believe in the whole theory of re-posting, my vocab-savvy ex-intern co-worker turned webbie nominee/first time author Teresa Wu found a true gem while browsing around the web. Thanks Teresa and can’t wait to see you at your launch party…it’s been a while.

(via teresawu)

Move here when you’re 18 or 22, maybe even 24. Come from somewhere else-the north, south, west, Xanadu- and come to realize that everyone living in New York is a transplant. Even the ones who grew up on the Upper East Side end up moving into a place downtown, which, as you’ll soon discover, is like moving to a different city.

Discover the cruel and bizarre world of New York City real estate. End up spending an obscene amount of money on something called a broker’s fee, first and last month’s rent and a security deposit. Cry a little bit in the leasing office but remind yourself that you’re so happy to be here.

Picture hearing a man playing the saxophone outside your bedroom window. End up hearing a lot of sirens instead. Figure it’s okay because it’s New York and you’re still so happy to be here.

Go out to bars in the Lower East Side because the Internet told you so. Fall in love with a bar called, Max Fish, and always stay out till four in the morning. Eat a falafel and have someone pay for a cab back to your apartment. Watch the sun start to rise while going over the Williamsburg Bridge and feel like your life is becoming some kind of movie.

Eat bad pizza but trick yourself into believing it’s good because it’s made in New York. Do the same thing with bagels and sex.

Meet people who will be your best friends for three or four months. They’ll help you transition into city life and take you to weird bars in Murray Hill. It will be like the blind leading the blind but once you get a firm grasp on things, you can stop returning their phone calls.

Watch your life in New York go through phases. Spend a summer in Fort Greene with a lover and get to know the neighborhood and its rhythms. Once the fling ends, forget the blocks, parks and restaurants ever existed and don’t return unless you have to.

Encounter a lot of people crying in public. Watch an NYU student cry in Think Coffee, a business woman in midtown sob into her cellphone, an old man whimper on a stoop in Greenpoint. At first, it will feel very jarring but, like everything else, it will become normal. Have your first public cry in front of a Bank of America. Cry so hard and don’t care if people are watching you. You pay good money to be able to cry in public.

Work long hours at a thankless job. Always be one step away from financial destitution. Marvel at how expensive New York is, how when you walk out the door, $20.00 immediately gets deleted from your wallet. Understand that even though no one has any money, everyone is privileged to live in New York City.

Go home for the holidays and run into old friends from high school. When you tell them that you live in New York, watch their eyes widen. They’ll say, “Oh my god, New York? That’s so crazy. I’m so jealous!” Have a blasé attitude about it but deep down inside, know they have good reason to be jealous.

Go home and feel relieved to be away from the energy of the city, that punishing 4:00 a.m. last call. Spend the first two days eating and sleeping, getting back to normal. Spend the last two days feeling anxious and ready to get back to your real home. Realize this city has you by the balls and isn’t going to let you go.

Someday you might grow tired of it all though. You might start crying in public more often than you’d like, have a bad break-up and want to pack it all up.

Certain moments of living in the city will always stick out to you. Buying plums from a fruit vendor on 34th street and eating three of them on a long walk, the day you spent in bed with your best friend watching Tyra Banks, the amazing rooftop party you attended on a sweltering hot day in July. These memories might seem insignificant but they were all moments when you looked around the city and felt like you were a part of it all.

When you leave the city, you probably won’t come back. Eventually your life in New York will seem so far away and sometimes you’ll even wonder if it really happened. Don’t worry. It did.

To me Christmas isn’t necessarily a season to purchase gifts and rack up credit card bills even further…perhaps when I was a kid a large part of the appeal was to see what new trinkets I could amass. While unnecessary, as a kid I viewed the gift giving aspect of the holiday as the cornerstone. As I’ve gotten older, been able to provide for myself, and have been living on my own for some time I’ve grown to realize that the holidays are merely a time to show your love and appreciation for those closest to you as well as those who were once that close to you. Living in another city has not always made it so easy to go home and stop off for a dinner here and there so the holidays, and generally the time off, provide you the opportunity to actually have a few days off and to catch up. Perhaps even more importantly, the holidays are a time to remember and honor those who we’ve lost throughout the years who have made a lasting impact on our lives…whether they be friends, family, idols, acquaintances or whatever.

This years my family has lost two individuals who were very near and dear to our hearts…most recently Joseph Juliana. While I’ve never had a grandfather present in my life, I can say that he was the closest I’ll ever have. He served as a companion for my grandmother for over a decade and to me…that means the world. My prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Joe, you were a good man and I am happy to have had you as a part of our lives. You’ll be greatly missed.

About 2 and a 1/2 years ago I left my college years and my childhood in pursuit of a career in photography. Through a series of events, I had managed to land myself an internship in New York which began a month prior to my graduation. When I had accepted the offer, I had no idea of what I’d be giving up…of what would change the minute the words “I accept” came from my mouth. 40 hours a week and 20 days a month…full time…real life…adulthood…and to top it off adulthood in a city that I knew nothing about aside from the Knicks and the Giants. Approximately 2 months into the what was supposed to be a 3 months stint, I turned the opportunity into a full-time job…how…why…who knows. It seemed like it was right so I went with it without questioning. I spent the next 21 months in this position. I learned a bit, networked, and created my life in the city…no longer was it visiting…New York had become my home.

In January of 2010 I made the conscious decision to pursue other avenues…perhaps a childish decision due to the fact that I still had job security which in an economic crisis is a rarity. I began working in the non-profit sector. At the time, I had no idea why but now I realize that it was because I wanted to help people…kids like me…who had a similar life…who weren’t given the best start…I wanted to help teach them that things can change despite how impossible they may seem. I faced many hurdles which tested my patience and my dedication but in the end was a worthwhile experience. After a lull in my photographic career I decided that I missed it and made strides to return. With a gap in my resume, the only place for me to begin once more was at an internship level once again. Although hard to swallow at first, I knew that it was the only way and that I was prepared to make that sacrifice. I did this on and off for 5 months with a variety of companies…and once again I learned a lot…this time less about the business and more about myself.

I returned to one of my previous employers via fate and have been there for 3 months once again. The same pay arrived, benefits covered, and it was all becoming tangible again. I received a random ping one day asking if this was permanent and when I said no, a contact was placed before my eyes. I applied, with little to no information regarding the position, and several days later a new message popped up in my inbox. Next was the interview…traveling to a part of town that otherwise would be dreaded…this time it felt right. I repeated over and over in my head “Confidence”…and I guess it actually stuck. I returned to my job without hearing much back. Something inside me clicked and I remembered my college professor saying in my head that “sometimes, you have to be the one to pursue it” so I sent over an e-mail and picked up the phone. A day or two later I was told that I was still in consideration. With my horoscope pointing to success in the job realm I began to become anxious….Why hasn’t anything happened yet? The following days I received several other offers…all out of left field but all deserved. Something was still missing…and it was an answer from the job that scared me out of my minds wits. Every other option seemed easy…the safe route…and that would’ve sufficed for the old “me” but I’ve been working on some things and wanted better for myself.

I followed up once again and received a surprisingly pleasant response. Several hours later I was sent an offer letter for the position. Now with tangible documents in my hand I began to question my original thoughts but the voice inside me compelled me to run the pen along the paper shortly before my legs carried me to the fax machine. With the push of a few buttons I had sealed my fate. Now as a part of one of the biggest journalism voices in the world, specifically one catering to my demographic, I begin the next chapter of my life…hold on tight.

This past weekend I went up to Killington, my old winter homeland, for the first ride of the season. Despite the turbulence that ensued at moments, we managed to have a memorable weekend all in all. Between the new relationships that were formed and the lessons that were learned, it was a great way to kickoff the 2010-2011 snow season. Thanks to the fine folks of OVR for their flawless organization.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend an event at the Nike Stadium space in China Town. Covering the walls were still photographs, printed in lifesize fashion, of New York City’s own Bridgerunners during their preparation for the New York Marathon. All of the photos were absolutely stunning and depicted the solidarity and individuality of the sport. To say the least, the images were incredibly inspiring and have made me want, even moreso, to become a part of the culture.

I’ve made a conscious decision to get back in the running game. I figure that it won’t last too long but while on the road to recovery I need to constantly place myself in positive situations. Over my time as a runner, I’ve realized how the majority of the sport is a mental battle in which one must learn to control their thought pattern in order to control their bodily functions. Growing up I had only really been a sprinter who retained the mindset of “I can’t run distances…I’m not that type of runner”. I never realized how detrimental one’s choice of wordage is as ultimately it is what determines whether or not the body will comply. By continually integrating negative words such as can’t, not, won’t, should, and so on…the body too retains those beliefs and is unable to follow through. While I rarely enjoy running from the start, it’s something that once you work into the groove of things, you really learn to appreciate it…then again it always helps to have Black Sabbath as your running buddy. Today I put down a whopping 3.84 miles on my first day running in over a half year. For someone who “wasn’t able” to run distances, that’s a hell of a distance to put down on day one.

Does it matter? I don’t think so. Why? Because music is meant to be felt and not understood. Their composite sound is reminiscent of so many artists and songs that I’ve beat to death over the years that it’s not worth mentioning. What is worth talking about, is how fucking good their sound is…really really really fucking good.

With homes in both Los Angeles and New York, Stoked Mentoring serves it’s community by empowering youths with positive life lessons instilled through a year-round curriculum of action spots and action sports related activities. While their reach is not immense(yet), their effects are. They say that if you can change one life, that you’ve made a difference…and well Steve Larosiliere and his staff have affected the lives of hundreds of at-risk youths since its formation in 2004. Coming up next week in New York, Stoked Mentoring is hosting it’s annual awards ceremony to acknowledge all of the people whose dedication and hard work has made this program as successful as it is. If you are in the area, please feel free to join myself and the many other Stoked Advocates in celebrating something incredible.

Need a little bit of motivation? View the videos below and see what making a difference is actually all about.

I cannot describe the excitement that I experienced when, over a year ago, I viewed a bootleg trailer of the new Tron film from Comicon. It has been known that Daft Punk was to compose the entire sound track for the film which, in itself is, sure to be a masterpiece but after having heard the first samplings of their work…I am left floored. Eagerly anticipating does not due my current state any justice.

I’ve been aware of this project in action for some time and regardless of how many times I catch up on its progress I am still touched every single time. Personally, skateboarding has provided me with endless opportunities to see and explore the world around me in a completely unique fashion. As an individual living in one of the worlds most opportunistic cities, I still am humbled by what it has given me so for someone in Kabul, a relatively post-modern society by today’s standards, I can not even fathom the drastic positive effects that something such as this has.

Living in New York City without a bottomless pit of a bank account amounts to two things: a) owning a bike and b) having no where to store it. Enter Bike Shelf by San Francisco mahogany stylist Knife & Saw. When attempting to find ways of mounting my cycle within the confides of my apartment I had decided on a $20 solution from the Container store which, while it’s artistic presence is lacking, gets the job done. However had I stumbled upon a few additional nickels and dimes in the sofa I would’ve considered this design…okay so I still am considering it regardless. Simple, tasteful, and well-executed…that about sums it up and at only $300 retail value it’s actually affordable.

Thanks for the tip Neen!

Certain things in life cause you to actually appreciate what you’ve been given regardless of the trials and tribulations that you may face. While things may seem bad there is always a lesson to be learned and a way to get through; whether of not that lesson is immediately evident is another story but it is always there. My heart goes out to Woody and all who have been touched by Oden but I know that his decision was made with the best of intentions and that Oden is in a much better place now.

It’s not just the pixie haircut and indie and blindly put together attire of Sharon Von Etten that has me drooling…that’s just an added bonus on top of her incredible and breathtaking voice. Upon listening to her newer tracks off of her soon-to-be released album, Epic, I was consumed with the beauty that is her work. Somber yet uplifting, Epic is sure to be on heavy rotation whenever at the desk…let’s sit and watch the play count climb as the 9-5 consumes me once again.

I must start off by being honest…I haven’t seen or used many of Nokia’s products since their old school cell phones that people used to have circa 2000; you know, the ones that you used to play snake on? However they’re still around so I assume they’re doing something right. While browsing around the web this morning, I stumbled onto a new initiative by Nokia and Burton Snowboards which directly marries action sports with technology and social networking sites such as facebook and twitter making your experience into a real life video game. While tweeting about just landing a switch hardflip down a 10 stair isn’t exactly the “in thing”, the fact that technology is at the point where it can recognize that instantaneously is kind of mind blowing. Watch the video below for more. I’m stoked to keep up with the developments.

The online marketplace offers its patrons incredible art in limited edition series’ at an affordable rate; the prices range from $20 to $2000 based on the size and quantities available. Over the course of my time on the site I’ve seen many of many favorite artist’s work come and go within mere minutes…I’ve even purchased several pieces but not for some time. This morning I received an e-mail announcing the final installment of Aaron Straup Cope’s prettymaps series. This particular piece was based off of a Manhattan overhead and is gorgeous to say the least….and since I now call New York home and for $27 you can’t beat it.

I, unlike many, have been an avid supporter of companies such as Nike, Adidas, Converse, and Reebok becoming involved in the skateboard industry…more competition forces the creative mind to drive harder and in the end create more durable products at a lower price point. Lately, I had been seeing a bunch of people pushing around in Converse, the newest corporate giant turned skate enthusiast, and I decided to give them a pair. I picked up some of the Pappalardo pro model and have been attempting to run them into the ground…to no avail. It’s safe to say I’ve been happy with the performance and the cost ($65 + tax). As the result of my new-found interest in the company’s objectives I decided to search a bit more at which point I stumbled onto their section on the site where you can design your own personal shoe. Similar to that of Nike I.D.’s custom-house, the Converse site allows you to hand pick ever pattern and color of every section of your shoe…down to the stitching. The major differences between the two are: Converse offering the shoes at a $60 value and Nike having a larger selection of models. Either way I think it’s fantastic…head on over and see what you can come up with yourself.

I don’t know what it is today…generally I’m very unproductive during gloomy and overcast days but I woke up this morning and was hit with a stroke of genius. Perhaps the ghost of famous photographers passed decided to make their way to my apartment however I doubt that’s the case as I live in the ghetto and no one comes here if they don’t have to…ESPECIALLY not ghosts. Either way I’ve formulated sketches for two shoots/projects/installations that I plan on doing over this coming winter. I’ve written, in detail, how I want all models to pose, the specific locations/seating arrangements I want them in, what props I want them to be holding, etc. I don’t know what has caused this as I’ve never been one to have a formal plan let alone one to document it. Perhaps this is the beginning of another new era in my photographic life….perhaps it was my hiatus of the art, perhaps it was all the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I’ve been eating lately, perhaps I smoked some really really good weed laced with the ashes Eadweard Muybridge, perhaps it was my new bed sheets finally breaking in, perhaps it was as the result of a conversation with a new individual in my life, perhaps it was because I finally learned how to pour a beer at work, perhaps it’s because I finally ate the secret right amount of barbeque chicken pizza from Mike’s Pizza…who knows…either way I’m excited.

P.S. Mom it’s not really the ghetto…I did it for dramatic effect.

Once again…well a lot has happened since I really wrote anything in here.

- Purchased 2 new cameras: Nikkormat EL and a Contax T2…stoked for their arrivals.

- Got another tattoo: Popychac Przez on my left foot.

- PA’d another shoot. This one was a 1920’s web series written by an incredibly talented couple named Gelber and Manning. Their skits are highly entertaining, well thought out, and filmed beautifully.

- Got “terminated” from my internship at Time Out New York…it was a short lived one but I did learn a few valuable lessons from that.

-Starting an internship/apprenticeship with my amazingly gifted friend Eric Ervin: I am BEYOND excited about this one and if you look at any of his work you’ll know why.

- Started my own arts & crafts projects…the first one up is a series of shelves made from old skateboards.

- Signing up for two classes at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn. Photoshop Intensive and Frame Building 101. After the photoshop class I plan on taking a coding class and after frame building I hope to take wood carving. I’d eventually love to build custom frames for people.

- I’ve become a bit inspired to shoot photographs again. I think taking time away has really allowed me to see what it is that I’m passionate about and to pursue it.

- Decided on a month of no drinking and am currently on day 24…and feeling GREAT.

- Reworked my budget….IT’S WORKING and re-invested my 401K….don’t I feel like an adult?

I’m sure I’m missing something but it in a nutshell here it is….hope you’ve enjoyed Mom!
